About my Dad, Penn Pennington:
My dad was born in Arkansas, and raised in Texas. He started playing guitar at the very young age of nine! In 6th grade he started playing french horn, and played french horn throughout high school. He graduated from Brazosport High School in Freeport, Texas in 1971. In July of 1980 my Dad moved to Nashville, TN to pursue his dream to play music.
In May of 1981, my dad was blessed with a very beautiful daughter, that would be me, Brandi Mykle. Before my dad knew I was a beautiful girl that would steal his heart away, he was hoping I would be a boy. He always tells everyone that he was disappointed for “snaps fingers” that long. My dad has been the greatest dad any girl can dream of having! Of course I really don’t remember the first couple of years of my life, being an infant and all, but I’m sure he changed diapers and did all the stuff new dad’s do.
I remember going with my Dad to shows while he played his steel guitar, and his electric guitar. I was 7 when he started playing at the Grand ole Opry and the Nashville Palace. He would take me with him when he played at the Palace and because I was there until after 2am, he would make me a pallet to sleep on...next to the drum set. Yes, I slept next to the drums, while they were being played. Music was my life too. My dad took me everywhere with him. I experienced so much and met so many people.
I can remember when my dad played with Jack Greene at the Opry, I wasn’t allowed back stage until I was 12. I had to sit in the lobby until he was finished playing, which was only about 30 minutes usually. Mitch Walker, the bass player for Jack, had a daughter that was about a year or two younger than me, Andrea. Andrea and I would hang out together in the lobby and play games until our dad’s finished their spot. I’ll never forget when I finally turned 12 and was able to go backstage at the Grand ole Opry. I loved watching my Dad play. He is amazing.
I have been very lucky to have a Dad like him. He has always been very loving and has always made me feel very special. I’m a huge Daddy’s girl, his princess. I am very blessed to have him very involved in my life. He lives 3 tenths of a mile from me, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
